The Warlock of Firetop Mountain: 311, 178, 162, 69, 244, 143, 44: Unexpected Places

As they say in art, always leave as much of the image blank and white as you can.

I am seriously beginning to question how they picked which scenes needed pictures. Maybe they thought the audience would be confused by the description or not know what a mosaic was?

Just seems like kind of a lackluster choice.

Hopscotch was weird in ancient times.
It seems silly, but I can't help but feel you shouldn't step on hands. I mean, hands just aren't where feet go, right?

It's interesting how you can make a situation tense just by providing any options at all.

Choice: Stars: 178

"Tiptoe, through the stars..."
When things go well in this game I feel disappointed. If I were just playing on my own, it would probably be a relief to tension when nothing happens. While writing a blog, however, I feel like there's not much to respond to.

Choice: Crossed: 162

Well, I keep going West, and it's 69, so... let's go!

Choice: West: 69

I'm being railroaded by a book.

     Choo-choo!

Choice: None: 244

Well, here we are.

Hm... Well, the town did say there was a ferryman. Suppose I'll sit down a spell and have some of Edwina's salami. I sit down and get out the meat. It's nice here. Cool and fresh.

     Aaaaah...

The Sleeper has... appeared from nowhere!
Uh... the Hades? A giant sandworm... in a stone cave... by a river. I just... huh...

Yes, I know this passage describes a sand bank, but still. How much sand is in a mountain for a giant worm to live there.

I do like the description of the orifice in 'what must be its head'. I sure hope that's the head. I don't want to get eaten by the other end. Despite the absurd notion of this giant predator being here, I like the description of it bursting out well enough.

Oh, and there's a picture. Far more appropriate time for illustration.

Not gonna lie, the tunnels are not helping it look less like a tapeworm.

I drop the salami at the sudden appearance of the monstrous foe. I grip my sword, and find myself once again in battle. Battle with an... ugh. I feel ill.

Round 1

Worm: 7-2=5

With what feels like all too practiced ease, I leap forward and dig the sword into the monsters tough skin. A quick slash, a spurt of ugly purple blood, and the fight has begun.

Round 2

Worm: 5

I bob and weave around the horrible maw, but it's tough to find an opening as it flails wildly about.

Round 3

Worm: 5
Henrietta: 17-2=15

Here I have the choice to run away. Swimming seems like a bad idea, however, and I can win this war of attrition. But, what would Henrietta do...

The creature snaps forwards, and catches my foot in its foul maw. I pull back, only to find it has me tight. It draws me closer. First it ruins my picnic and now it would have me for lunch! I'm not having that!

Round 4

Worm: 5
Henrietta: 15

I lose my boot into the creatures ravenous gullet, but my foot is free to fall upon the sand of the bank. I stab my sword forward, and it bounces off the creatures teeth with an hideous screeching.

Round 5

Worm: 5-2=3
Henrietta: 15

When the blade clashes with teeth a second time, I drive it upwards. I catch the creature in its gum, and nick it deeply. The creature recoils in pain, and when it does I strike at the exposed stomach, lancing it with another lunge of my blade.

Round 6

Worm: 3-2=1
Henrietta: 15

The lunge lands home, and I dig it further, putting my whole weight into it. The blade sinks to the hilt. The creature starts scrambling and weaving around, but I hold onto my blade with one hand, and hug the side with the other. I find myself atop the beast, desperately hanging on as it twists and bucks in agony.

Round 7

Worm: 1-1=-1
Henrietta: 15

The creature twists and turns ever more wildly. I release the sword to grip its malodorous hide with both hands. It flails like the tail of a dying cat, and all it does is twist and wiggle the blade around its own innards, until at length it collapses from exhaustion. It fades away beneath me.

I sit panting on the creature. Is this what I am now? A killer? The beast attacked me, but it was only an animal. Maybe I could have ran.

That thought doesn't stick well with me. The creature is so hideous I can only be glad it is dead, and no longer devouring those who come by it.

I go see if I can find my salami in the sand. They're still good if you just brush off the dirt.

Victory: 44

I sit and eat my salami. I feel better afterwards, though the stink of the creature's corpse has ruined the picnic feel of it all. I wait a bit longer for the ferryman to arrive. He doesn't.

I seal my rucksack and wade into the water.

Henrietta: 15+5=19
