The Warlock of Firetop Mountain: 300, 102, 19, 317: The Don'ts of Raising Dwarves

Oh boy, more screaming.

Still disturbed by my failure to intervene with the last cries for help, I move to open the door.  Please don't be locked!

Choice: Open the Door: 102

Primitive piñatas were not child friendly.

Hm... an interesting choice here. Avenge the dwarf, punish the cruel, or just keep myself safe. It really... oh, hang on, there's a third choice...

*insert spit-take*
     Uh... huh...

Okay, I probably wouldn't have thought of that, since I'm playing Henrietta, but bless Livingstone's and Jackson's dreadful little hearts, this choice is amazing. If I wasn't doing the character thing, I'd try this in a heartbeat just to see where it goes.

Well, that's just not Henrietta. So, let me get into character again...

I stare at the Dwarf lying there. Dead? I don't know. But the glee on the creatures' faces... that I know. The glee of mean little boys pulling the wings off of flies. But in adult creatures. Too old to have it beaten out of them again. I draw my sword.

"I can't let you hurt anyone else."

Choice: Fight: 19

Oh, thank Tiamat they weren't orcs!

Round 1

Goblin: 5-2=3

The goblins stare back at me with confused faces. One of them sticks his blade back in the poor, hopefully dead, Dwarf. I am upon him in an instant, battering away with my blade!

Round 2

Goblin: 3-2=1

The goblin flails and tries desperately to pull its sword back out from the dwarfs stout gut. I don't give him a chance. Blow after blow I land down upon him. His friend shrieks at the spectacle. Not so funny when the swords in one of your friends, is it? I don't have the breath to say it, but I try to put the words into my furious glare.

Round 3

Goblin: 1

The goblin manages to wrench his sword from the poor hanging corpse. He ducks round the Dwarf, and I chase after him. Like children playing tag around the furniture.

Round 4

Goblin: 1-1=-1

With a mighty swing, I cleave the goblin's head from his shoulders, and it rolls across the floor.

His companion is assaulting me before I have a chance to warn him off.

Round 5

Our blades clash and clang. I dare say I'm getting the hang of this!

Round 6

Goblin: 6-2=4

The creature is vile, and brutishly strong, but it is short, and I rain blows down from above. He hardly has any leverage with which to stop them. His meak arms buckle under the strain, and I cut him deep across the temple.

Round 7

Goblin: 4
Henrietta: 13-2=11

Even as he slumps down with the weight of my blow, the creature leans forwards and digs his foul, yellow teeth into my leg.

     "AUGH! You fiend!"

Round 8

Goblin: 4-2=2
Henrietta: 11

I flail out, with the teeth worrying into my leg. I slam the hilt of my sword down upon it over and over again, as though trying to break open a very obstinate walnut. He doesn't let go. Instead he loses several teeth as he is ripped away.

Round 9

Goblin: 2-2=0
Henrietta: 11

As his teeth spray across the floor, the goblin scrambles to get up from the ground. He squeals in a language I don't recognize, but I know what he means. He's begging like a dog. He wants mercy.

I look to the mangled Dwarf. His face is riddled with scars. His body wracked with fresher wounds. I imagine him begging for mercy, and the goblins laughing and skewering him over and over again. They don't deserve mercy.

I stand over the goblin. I sheathe my sword and kick him hard in the head. He goes limp. I don't think he's dead. I wouldn't shed a tear if he is. But, I will not slay him. He may not deserve mercy, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't give it.

Victory: 317

Ah, fresh goblin pocket cheese, my favorite.

Food is food, at this point. I take the cheese and lay the Dwarf down to rest.

"I am sorry I can't take you off for a proper burial," I tell him. I check the goblin I knocked aside. He is still breathing. I bind his hands with his dead comrade's belt, and hang the belt by the same hook that held the Dwarf. No vengeance from him to fear.

Another fight. Not as bad, but no resting, either.

I will say I set out with a light heart, and every intention to keep the character upbeat... but there is something very brutal about the scenes in this game. I never appreciated how skillfully these simple books push a stark and bleak Sword and Sorcery aesthetic.
