The Forest of Doom: 187

Well, I bet this isn't a trap.
I feel almost unwell without the coin. Even the goblin seems threatening in the dark woods. Come on, Lucky. You can get through this. Start small.

I walk up to the goblin, and wave. "Hail, goblin, where did you find that rod?"

Choice: Talk: 203

Icke was right!
"Just my luck," I say with an edge of true disappointment.

Round 1

Lucky: 17-2=15

I scramble back to draw my sword, but the creature is fast. A mad scramble under and round claws leaves me completely winded, and the creature robust and deadly.

Round 2

Lucky: 15-2=13

I dart round a tree in the woods to draw my sword. When I come back... the creature is gone... I take a tentative step forward, ready to strike, but the creature is nowhere to be seen. I realize my obvious blunder too late, as a sapling beside me transforms and digs a horrible reptilian claw into my arm.

Round 3

Lucky: 13
Shape Changer: 10-4=6
Luck: 12-1=11

I stagger back, fighting the urge to clutch my bleeding arm. Instead I wipe my hand across my brow, staining it red. "Lady," I call out, "I wear your color!" The shape changer tilts its reptilian head a moment, in curious confusion. But it doesn't stop it lunging forward, mouth wide.

I stumble back, trip over a root, and fall hard on my rump. It aches, but the creature's lunge goes well over me, and I kick it as hard as I can in its soft underbelly.

Round 4

Lucky: 13-2=11
Shape Changer: 6
Luck: 11

The creature falls down, clutching its stomach in agony. I stand and attempt to strike it. Even as I do, however, from the monster's back a third arm emerges! It grabs hold of my sword arm and it so hard that not only does my shoulder dislocate, but I fall right before the terrible maw of the creature.

     It hisses in satisfaction.

Round 5

Lucky: 11
Shape Changer: 6-4=2
Luck: 11-1=10

Even as it hisses, I shove my head directly into it's open mouth. My luck holds, because even as I feel it's sharp teeth scrape my skin and its foul tongue lick my blood, it can't seem to close its jaw around my head. In a moment, it's mouth will probably be bigger, but for now the confusion is enough. I bring the sword blindly up. I feel the blade tear open the beast's gullet. I push on it and pull my head out, to see the scaly brute staggering backwards, his innards spilling across the path.

Round 6

Lucky: 11
Shape Changer: 2
Luck: 10

I stand up and look down at the steaming entrails and the creature. I hold my sword up and flick organs from the blade.

"Yeah, no," I tell the creature, "I'm not falling for that."

With an ugly slurping sound the creature retracts its organs back inside itself, and returns to its true form. There is still a long gash on its belly, but not enough to stop it staggering up and hissing at me.

Round 7

Lucky: 11
Shape Changer: 2-2=0
Luck: 10

I shake my head. "Another monster fighting to its death, rather than being sensible about things. Run, lick your wounds. You may live."

The beast makes a very strange hissing. Is it laughing, and then leaps towards me. The leap is closely. A crude approximation of the same move it used previously, now hindered by the gash.

I side step the leaping lizard, and bring my blade down hard on its back. The blow severs the creature in two. It's strange... almost like it has no bones. Perhaps a creature that can change so much can't have proper bones?

The two halves of the creature lie harmless on the ground. To be certain I stab it pretty much everywhere. You never know where shapeshifters keep their hearts and brains.

This grisly business done, I clean myself and my sword as best I can with the cloth I carry and just a bit of my water for such things. Then I sheathe the blade and head onwards.

Choice: Victory!: 373

This was written in England. No way those mushrooms are safe.

From what I can tell violet mushrooms are almost always either poison or magic. I reach out to take my chance, but halt myself. I don't have my coin. I should not push the Lady so soon after calling her in battle. I will need Luck soon enough.

Also, the Shape Changer chose this log to fight to the death by, so... yeah there's a significant chance these are disguised children or shape changer eggs. I stomp upon them until they are nothing but spores.

Feeling better, I unpack some food and eat it as I leave.

Hang on a moment, because I am not letting this go. The black rod was part of the Shape Changer? Did it grow a part of its body to be able to throw it away from itself? Was the leather strap hiding sinew and flesh still connecting it all?

I suppose it does call it an illusion. In which case, scholars of Titan, get on your naming. If it uses illusions it's a Glamor Lizard, not a Shape Changer. Come on, this is etymology 103!
